Alabaster Grace Notes is our daily devotion designed to be a short but meaningful message. This devotion is perfect for anytime and pairs well with Bible reading.
Casting Every Care
Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.
— 1 Peter 5:6–7 (ESV)
Peter links humility with anxiety in a way that may surprise us. To humble ourselves under God’s mighty hand is to release the illusion that we control outcomes. Anxiety often grows from the belief that everything depends on us. Humility loosens that grip.
The command to “cast” our cares carries the image of throwing something decisively. It is not a gentle suggestion to consider trusting God; it is an invitation to actively transfer the weight. Dependence is not passive resignation—it is deliberate surrender.
God’s might is not threatening to His children. The same mighty hand that governs history also holds us personally. His care is not abstract or distant. Peter reminds suffering believers that beneath God’s sovereign strength is tender compassion.
Humility bows low. Dependence reaches upward. In both movements, we discover that we are upheld.
Prayer:
Mighty and compassionate Father, I bring my anxieties to You today. Forgive me for carrying burdens You never intended me to bear alone. Teach me to humble myself under Your sovereign care. Help me trust that You are both powerful and deeply attentive to my needs. Amen.
“God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him.” — John Piper
