But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me.” Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took ahold of him, saying to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” (Matthew 14:30-31, ESV)
Always the outspoken disciple, Peter asks Jesus to command him to come on the water, and Jesus honors Peter’s request. Everything is fine with Peter’s first steps, walking on the water toward Jesus, but then he becomes afraid of the wind and begins to sink. Peter cries out to Jesus to save him, and Jesus grabs him and says, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?”
Webster defines faith as firm belief even in the absence of proof, complete confidence. While operating on faith, have you ever begun to have doubt? We certainly have, and with disappointing and sometimes worse consequences leading us to ask ourselves, “What happened?” Well, we lost our firm belief and complete confidence, and our actions faltered and failed.
God wants us to have complete confidence in Him in everything, all the time. By having complete confidence in God, He can work amazing things through us, using us as His vessels of action. With complete confidence in Him, God empowers us to accomplish what we would never be able to do on our own.
"The issue of faith is not so much whether we believe in God, but whether we believe the God we believe in."
