I lift up my eyes to the hills.
From where does my help come?
My help comes from the Lord,
who made heaven and earth.
(Psalm 121:1-2 ESV)
As the psalmist anticipates his journey through “the hills” to Jerusalem, a route filled with anxiety, he seeks help, perhaps looking around and within, and then he finally looks up. He realizes that his help comes from the Lord.
This psalm is speaking of a time when trouble is everywhere you look. There is only one help for the psalmist or anyone else who is surrounded by problems. Look up and rejoice, look to God to provide.
Sometimes, when we are in the valley of despair everything looks hopeless. In this life, we go through valleys, but we must always look up for help and climb back up to the mountaintop. Do not keep looking downward, but look up to the hills toward God. God has promised to help us, and He is faithful to His promises.
"The Christian life is not a constant high. I have my moments of deep discouragement. I have to go to God in prayer with tears in my eyes, and say, ‘O God, forgive me,’ or ‘Help me.’" – Billy Graham
