But this command I gave them: ‘Obey my voice, and I will be your God, and you shall be my people. And walk in all the way that I command you, that it may be well with you.’
(Jeremiah 7:23 ESV)
The disciples had a role to play in fulfilling Jesus' prophecy. When they were told to go find the donkey and colt for Jesus, did they realize what they were doing?
If they had studied the Old Testament, they would have realized the scripture in Zechariah 9:9, “Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your King is coming to you; He is just and having salvation, Lowly and riding on a donkey, A colt, the foal of a donkey.” The prophecy was fulfilled when the King of Kings came into Jerusalem as the Passover Lamb.
The disciples could very well have listened to Jesus, but not followed through with His command. They could have shrugged it off as something that seemed unimportant and insignificant. But they didn’t. They trusted Jesus and obeyed Him even when the direction did not make sense.
It is the same for us. We are to listen to and obey God's voice through His Word and the direction of the Holy Spirit. We may not understand what He sometimes asks of us, but if we obey in the little things, He will trust us to obey in the big things.
“There's some task which the God of all the universe, the great Creator, your redeemer in Jesus Christ has for you to do, and which will remain undone and incomplete until by faith and obedience you step into the will of God.”
