There is nothing in us that allows us to claim that we are capable of doing this work. The capacity we have comes from God; it is he who made us capable of serving the new covenant, which consists not of a written law but of the Spirit.
(2 Corinthians 3:5-6)
Can you imagine being Elisha and feeling Elijah’s mantle covering over you?
All of us as God’s children are given a mantle, a calling. Each calling is unique and greater than who we are, such as the case with Elisha. Our calling is too big for us by ourselves. If we were to see in the spiritual arena, it wouldn’t seem to fit or match who we are.
So why has God given each of us a mantle that is too big for us? It is not meant to fit us by ourselves. It is meant to fit who we are to become. Think of a child whose parents buy clothes too big, but who know their child will grow into them. So too, the mantle that God has for each of us must be beyond who we presently are. But as we grow in the Lord, the mantle comes to fit us.
Do not be discouraged, but accept the greatness of your calling and that it is over and beyond you. Believe it, and, with God, rise to it.
"All of God's people are ordinary people who have been made extraordinary by the purpose he has given them."
- Oswald Chambers
