By the word of the LORD the heavens were made, their starry host by the breath of his mouth. (Psalm 33:6 NIV)
The creation story is almost too unbelievable for our feeble minds. God spoke everything into existence. The stars formed by His breath and words of His mouth, the earth was created, and we were made in His image.
Imagine standing in front of a blank canvas. There is no evidence of anything being there. It is completely devoid of color or substance. But as the amazing colors are added, it becomes a true work of art.
Last night, looking into a clear sky with an abundance of stars, planets, and the full moon, the children’s song came to mind: “Twinkle, twinkle little star how I wonder what you are. Up above the world so high. Like a diamond in the sky.” The stars were twinkling as if alive and proclaiming the goodness of their creator.
What an amazing God we have. He spoke the world into existence with His mouth, with His breath. He made this beautiful world so that we can see His fingerprints of glory in every part of creation.
The next time you have a clear starlit night, gaze into the sky with the awareness that the Creator of everything chose you. He put His breath of life into you. The One who created the heavens and starry host also created you in His image so that you would go forth and shine His light!
"If created things are seen and handled as gifts of God and as mirrors of His glory, they need not be occasions of idolatry – if our delight in them is always also a delight in their Maker." - John Piper
