I call to you when my heart is faint.
Lead me to the rock that is higher than I.
(Psalm 61:2 ESV)
One of our favorite hymns is On Christ the Solid Rock I Stand, written by Pastor Edward Mote over 150 years ago. The words are just as true for us today as they were then.
When he was 18 years old, Mr. Mote heard God's Word and it changed his heart He became a believer in Jesus Christ, and subsequently wrote this hymn on his walk to work one day. Later in life, Mr. Mote became pastor of a small Baptist church and remained there until his death.
The powerful words of this hymn are filled with such truth, grace and relevance:
"My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus' blood and righteousness;
I dare not trust the sweetest frame,
But wholly lean on Jesus' name.
On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand;
All other ground is sinking sand.
All other ground is sinking sand."
When life is unsure and unsteady, turn to Jesus who is the Rock that will not move or change. Jesus Christ is sure and safe, loving and gracious, forgiving and faithful, powerful and strong. And His words are the truth and bring life and freedom. May you find rest today on the Rock.
"If you have Christ as your Rock, the Lord is the Builder, and you are regularly partaking in the Word of God. This will serve to increase your faith so that all of the painful trials of life cannot shake such a sure foundation as the one that God builds. All other ground is sinking sand."
