To be wise you must first have reverence for the LORD.
If you know the Holy One, you have understanding.
(Proverbs 9:10 GNT)
What is understanding from a biblical or Hebrew perspective? The Hebrew word for understanding is "binah". “Binah” comes from the Hebrew word for between, and implies the ability to distinguish the real from the unreal, the true from the false.
Understanding comes from "rightly dividing the word of truth" (2 Timothy 2:15), as it is in the Scriptures that we have been “equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:16).
The Lord wants us to know Him in a deep and intimate way. He wants us to have more of relationship with Him that involves not just the head, but also the heart. When we have understanding of His love for us, we are able to impart that knowledge and understanding to others, using the wisdom that comes from Him.
“It has pleased God that divine verities should not enter the heart through the understanding, but the understanding through the heart.” - Blaise Pascal
